I was lucky enough to meet incredible talent on the Ukrainian tech scene. But Ms. Nana Koreneva and her company Ampli stood out, their efforts so unique that it was worth highlighting and shining a spotlight on this incredible WOW Woman. Ms. Koreneva is passionate about the future generations of Ukrainians. Nana provides coaching and lessons for teens to turn into well-rounded adults, helps them develop inquisitive minds and continue questioning the status quo. Her dream is to help young adults achieve results in the corporate or start up worlds, find success in commercial, non-profit or entrepreneurial ventures. Her goal is to see the next generation create a better life for themselves and for the future of the country. Nana is inspiring us and her unapologetic demeanor is 100% goals.

Founder at Ampli. Management in Marketing + MBA.
4. What did you study in school?
Regular school, without a specific specialization.
5. What was the journey like to get where you are (in life and career-wise)? What are some accomplishments you’re most proud of, and what was the turning point to set you on a current path in life?
From professional point of view, I worked for a long time at a Norwegian company; probably too long - 15 years. But I am grateful that during that time I experienced foreign work ethic, execution and workflow and understood European mentality and pride in one’s work. I never worked in a strictly Ukrainian company (although currently Ukrainian firms are learning the same skills, and in a rather accelerated way). After this experience I quickly realized that my skills brought an advantage, although it wasn’t always clearly understood by my countrymen. Working in an international corporate giant wasn’t fulfilling for me because my creativity, innovative ideas and drive to “go off the script” wasn’t supported or celebrated. I love to create and become an entrepreneur, but for the longest time I didn’t dare to make the leap.
Finally, in 2013 when I had enough, I launched an educational company robotics.GE in Tbilisi, Georgia. It focused on teaching kids robotics based on Lego education. Two years later I launched a new teaching platform called GolTeens for Ukrainian teenagers. After leaving that platform due to creative differences with my partners, I restarted my efforts with the same concept - focusing on accelerating tech skills of teenagers in Ukraine. In the coming months we will also be looking to expand to other countries.
At Ampli we help teenagers develop skills in programming, design and general soft business skills helpful for nurturing the next generation of Ukrainian entrepreneurs. We encourage critical thinking, creativity and operating outside the box. We help promising teenagers obtain their first internship with a start-up and further advance their training and understanding of what it means to create a company around an idea (commercial or social) from ground up.
6. How is your life different from what you pictured at 20?
I look at today’s twenty-year-olds and I truly envy them, because during my adolescence we didn’t have such opportunities (although I”m sure our parents said the same thing about our generation, but I doubt it). At 20 I didn’t have the drive or imagination to see myself as an entrepreneur. That thought came closer to maturity at 30+ years of age and only after knowing how things really work in the world. I started working in the “dashing 90’s” when Ukrainian-owned business ventures were still ‘green’ and emerging. It was in the 90’s when we first started seeing new international companies entering the country and our only choice was to be employed by one of them (which is exactly what I did). When I was a child I wanted to be a teacher. And currently I sort of elevated teaching to a new level, and became an educational entrepreneur.
7. Was there a time when life knocked you down or out and how did you get back up on your feet?
The most difficult for me period in life was the Kyiv’s Maidan atrocities, the outbreak of war and the post-traumatic stress syndrome that followed. At the time I was shattered physically and psychologically for at least a month. In fact the idea and launch of GolTeens raised me literally off my bed and into work mode.
I had this goal, to influence the future. In my case I understood that it was too late to influence adults (who I realized were too ossified) and focus on the future generations. I thought that I would nurture proactive mindsets in teens, help them obtain cool (and practical) skills and develop critical thinking around applying those skills to a possibly uncertain future.
8. Advice for other women?
In my immediate surroundings there was not only a lack of female entrepreneurs but in general I was surrounded exclusively by corporate workers. Thus the idea of discovering and creating something of my own was born out of desire for freedom and creativity. I was crushed by the limitations of a corporation, but I could have switched companies also and I didn’t. Life depends solely on who is living it. If you want to do something, do it. That’s it. There will be tears, mistakes, despair, resentment, all is normal and is part of the journey. One should celebrate mistakes, as they are lessons. The main thing is to not be afraid to start, and not be afraid to be strong.
Oftentimes girls are raised to be weak and there is a common belief out there that if a woman is strong she must be unhappy in her personal life and that’s the reason she wholeheartedly dedicates herself to her business. In my personal experience all strong and successful women and men are are also successful in their personal lives. A man who is passionate and interested in growing his ideas or business is that much more attractive to me, and I’m drawn more toward that individual.
I don’t separate men and women in my professional sphere. In my opinion they are equally capable, at least in democratic countries.
In conclusion, I’d say constantly leave your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to do that because your inner core strengthens as a result of difficulties and failures. Don’t pay attention to empty criticism and surround yourself with like-minded people. Let go of relationships with people who make you weaker, keep striving for your goals and in the process form new goals, all while spending time with loved ones. Rinse and repeat.
9. Knowing what we know now in current political climate, can women be "all that we can be" in today's world? What is the way forward, as you see it, for "feminist values"?
In Ukraine, even in the large IT companies pay gap exists and men receive 20% higher wages than women. There are also plenty of stereotypes about roles of females in a society. This can be overcome but first women have to take a stand and do something about it. Currently in Ukraine there are no active feminist voices like there are in US. But there does exist, as I call it, a secret matriarch. Ukrainian women in their core, are very strong, but due to surviving centuries of patriarchy they learned to be sneaky. But to truly change something you have to act.
If we talk strictly entrepreneurial ventures, representation matters. Different conferences are full of male entrepreneurs and speakers. And one could say - why don’t you call women? But truly there are a few of us in the industry.
No one in Ukraine forbids women to pursue entrepreneurial ideas or initiate start-ups. Just go for it and begin, I say. In my opinion women have to start working with their own self-identifying prejudices and overcome them.
10. Where in the world do you feel “tallest” (i.e. where is your happy place)?
I never thought about moving out of Ukraine. All the ingredients are here for a happy life. I would rather travel a lot, but always come back home. From the point of view of business, everything exciting is happening here right now. In fact, entrepreneurs from countries with stagnant economies flock here. Everything is just being created and nurtured. As an example of our innovative progress, we are in the top 2 in the world (!) in development of NFC payments according to VISA and top-5 according to MasterCard. The most important thing to me is that my (Ukrainian) people are here, I understand them and their mindset. It is easier to create and launch products here, all while understanding my target audience (but I think again, as an entrepreneur)
11. What extra-curricular activities/hobbies are you most proud of? Why?
My current hobby is starting companies. I have three I started in the last six years. As for extra-curricular, I’m an ambassador of power yoga and practice it often.
12. What do you want to be when you grow up? Future goals/challenges?
Oh, but I’m already a grown-up. I suppose looking at myself with my 20-year old eyes I would have wanted to become me, and would have been proud and content. In terms of professional goals, I would like to grow Ampli into an international technology-focused educational company. I would also like to travel more. Everything else, I have time to achieve.
13. What fears are you still hoping to overcome?
The speed with which the world is changing - one has to consistently stay on top of it. The constant fear of war we carry, from the close proximity with Russia is quite real. But this century-old need of conquest doesn’t exactly allow us to think that it will be any different in the future.
14. Anything you'd do differently, if you had another go at life?
I would have decided to start my business sooner. As it turns out, it's not scary at all. Walking in circles, second guessing myself it turns out was scarier. It’s like jumping off a cliff. You of course have to choose a reasonable height, but then once you jump and realize that you don’t crash - it’s a great feeling. Then it’s just all about moving your legs and using your brain.
15. What inspires you?
Teenagers. No wonder I focus on them. My son is 15-years-old and I am mindful (and am reminded) of this every day as I witness the developmental stages. Teens are still so direct, and pure, with limited stereotypes and fears of failure, still so full of energy to achieve something.

Because so much time is spent on the computer, I’m inspired by water and grass (and any combination of the two). I just celebrate life.
As my mom always taught me - that happiness consists of little things. Successful entrepreneurs. Not just those who achieve but also those who have gone through difficulties, fell, rose, succeeded, tried. That is very inspiring to me.
16. What are you hopeful about?
That war with Russia will end. That Ukrainian people with values, brains and energy to create a better future will reach power. That adults (grown-ups) will continue the learning process throughout their lives, forming similar habits to learn and grow among their children. That smart, driven and proactive Ukrainians will return to the country to create cool products and services. I hope we will succeed.
17. What are some ingredients to a good life?
Love, children, beloved work that brings living wage, development (mental and physical), sports, delicious cuisine, travels and exploration, plenty of good books, cool films… etc. Am I a banal?
Oh, and wine!!
18. What is a quality you most love about yourself and why?
I’m strong; that I know. When things get tough, I remind myself “but you have you!”
19. What advice would you give your 14-year-old self?
Think with solutions, since no one appreciates, as we say in Ukraine, ‘snot or problems’. Be proactive, everything in life will depend exactly on you. And this is good news!
Love, there will be plenty of it, don’t worry. But do take care to treat yourself with respect and treat him respectfully too. Yes, you’re thin, but trust me, you will be happy about it after 30. Generally, appearance is in your hands, baby.
Don’t try to be like others. Your uniqueness will be your ace.
Adults say that life goes quickly. And it’s true!!! Don’t waste time on nonsense. Launch your first commercial project by age 20 and don’t pay attention to opinions of others, especially those who couldn’t cut it in business and failed.
Find happiness in small things, mom is right! This will indeed make you happy every day.

Unfortunately none. There are none among men also; I do not recognize idols.

4. Что вы учили в школе?
Обычная школа без уклона во что-либо.
5. Как вы сюда попали? Каково ваше путешествие, как добраться сюда? (в жизни и в карьере)? Каковы некоторые достижения, которыми вы больше всего гордитесь, и каков был поворотный момент, чтобы установить вас на текущий путь в жизни?
С профессиональной точки зрения - я долгое время работала в большой норвежской корпорации, пожалуй, слишком долго - 15 лет. Но это время дало мне понимание, как должны выглядеть процессы глазами норвежцев и немцев, отношение к качеству и execution в работе. Я никогда не работала в чисто украинской компании и чисто украинским менеджментом (а надо сказать, что украинцы только учатся этому, хоть и очень интенсивно). Поэтому такой опыт не сразу был понятен, но на разнице подходов других людей - стало ясно, что это огромное преимущество. Но работа в международной корпорации с, как правило, пластмассовыми заучиваемыми ценностями никогда не делала меня счастливой, учитывая, что я по натуре люблю что-то создавать, а тут с таким большим количеством правил и бюрократии креативность, новые идеи и инновации были обречены. Поэтому хотелось уйти в предпринимательство, но долго не решалась. В итоге в 2013 году запустила образовательную компанию robotics.GE в Тбилиси (Грузия) для обучения детей робототехнике на базе Lego Education. Еще через два года - образовательную платформу GoITeens для подростков в Украине. В 2018 году я разошлась с партнерами и перезапустила платформу уже в формате подросткового акселератора Ampli, который сейчас активно развиваем, с желанием развить на его базе дистанционный формат обучения, который пока запустили по всей Украине, но планируем адаптировать программы и выходить на другие рынки в скором будущем.
6. Как ваша жизнь отличается от того, что вы думали в 20 лет? И сейчас?
Я смотрю на сегодняшних двадцатилетних и откровенно им завидую, потому что у нас таких возможностей не было (наверное, в свое время говорили и о нас, но сомневаюсь))) В 20 лет у меня не было больших планов по запуску чего-либо, это появилось уже ближе к 30 годам с пониманием, что и как устроено. Мои 20 проходили в лихие 90-тые годы, когда бизнес только зарождались в Украине, только заходили международные компании и самым лучшим вариантом было работать в них, что я и сделала. Я точно помню, что в детстве я мечтала быть учителем, ну вот сейчас я учительство просто перевела на другой уровень - образовательное предпринимательство.
7. Было ли время, когда жизнь сбила вас с ног или как вы поднялись на ноги?
Наверное, самым таким сложным периодом был как раз Майдан, начало войны и посттравматический синдром после. Пожалуй, сложнее периода с психологической и физической точки зрения не было и тогда, кстати, именно идея запустить GoITeens меня и подняла, буквально (потому что до этого я месяц почти не вставала). То есть я нашла точку применения желанию менять все вокруг - в данном случае менять все вокруг уже не влияя на взрослых, которые слишком закостенелые для этого. А влиять на подростков, формируя проактивный mindset с правильными жизненными установками и целями, давай возможность набрать много крутых навыков, а потом уже выбирать, какие из них где применить в жизни, ведь мы понятия не имеем, в каком мире им доведется жить.
8. Совет для других женщин?
В моем окружении никогда не было не то что женщин-предпринимателей, да вообще я была окружена исключительно корпоративными работниками. Поэтому идея открыть что-то свое родилась из желания свободы и творчества. В моем случае были давящие рамки корпорации, которые меня просто душили. Но был же выход сменить одну корпорацию на другую. Это я к тому, что жизнь зависит исключительно от того, кто ее живет. Хочешь делать, делай. Все. Будут ошибки, слезы обиды или отчаяния, возможно, неверия (у меня не было) - это нормально. Ошибкам вообще надо радоваться, это же уроки. Но просто не бояться начать. И еще - не бояться быть сильной. Потому что часто девочек воспитывают как слабых и есть предубеждение, что сильные женщины просто несчастны в личной жизни, поэтому посвятили себя бизнесу. По моему опыту все сильные и успешные женщины и мужчины успешны и в личной жизни. Увлеченная своим делом человек - привлекателен, он горит своим делом, с ним хочется быть. Я в жизни мало разделяю людей в профессиональной сфере на мужчин и женщин, у всех равные возможности на самом деле, по крайней мере в демократических странах. Итого - выходить постоянно из зоны комфорта, не бояться, оттачивать сложностями и неудачами сильный внутренний стержень, не обращать внимания на пустую критику, окружать себя похожими людьми, отпускать из жизни людей, которые делают тебя слабее, идти к своей цели, формировать по ходу новые цели, уделять много времени любимым людям, приносить добро, любить жизнь и так по кругу)
9. Зная, что мы знаем сейчас в нынешнем политическом климате, могут ли женщины быть «всем, чем мы можем быть» в современном мире? Как продвигается, как вы понимаете, «феминистские ценности»?
В Украине сейчас даже в больших IT компаниях зарплата мужчин на 20% выше, чем у женщин. Есть большое количество стереотипов относительно ролей женщины и мужчины в обществе и это можно преодолеть, но для этого нужно чтобы сами женщины что-то для этого делали. В Украине нет активного феминизма, как это есть в США, например. Но есть, как я его называю, скрытый матриархат) Потому что украинские женщины по своей сути очень сильные, но в силу патриархальности общества, просто научились быть хитрыми. Но чтобы действительно что-то поменять, нужно действовать. Если говорить о предпринимательстве - разные конференции, форумы - полны спикерами мужчин-предпринимателей. И можно было бы сказать, а чего вы женщин не зовете? Но просто нас действительно мало, да еще и со значительными достижениями уже. А кто-то женщинам запрещает заниматься предпринимательством? В Украине точно нет. Бери да делай. Это все установки в голове. Вот с этим и нужно работать, на мой взгляд.
10. Где в мире вы чувствуете себя «самым высоким» человеком (т. е. Где ваше счастливое место)?
Я никогда не задумывалась о том, чтобы переехать из Украины. Здесь есть все для того, чтобы быть счастливой. Я предпочту много путешествовать, но возвращаться всегда сюда. С точки зрения бизнеса - здесь все бурлит, наоборот, предприниматели из стран со стогнирующей экономикой приезжают сюда, потому что здесь все только создается и создается, кстати, уже с учетом последних технологий (например, мы в top-2 в мире (!) по развитию NFC платежей по версии VISA и в top-5 по версии MasterCard). Самое главное - здесь свои люди, я их понимаю (их mindset), здесь проще создавать и запускать продукты, понимая свою ЦА (но я опять мыслю как предприниматель)
11. Какими дополнительные занятиями / хобби вы больше всего гордитесь? Зачем?
У меня сейчас хобби запускать компании)) Три за последние 6 лет. Из остального - пожалуй силовая йога - я ее абассадор.
12. Чего вы хотите, когда “вырастите”? Будущие цели / задачи?
Ой, ну я уже выросла)) Наверное, глядя на себя сегодняшнюю в свои 20 лет я бы хотела быть собой, то есть я была бы довольна. Из целей - превратить Ampli в международную технологическую образовательную компанию. Больше путешествовать. На остальное у меня хватает времени)
13. Какие страхи вы все еще надеетесь преодолеть?
Скорость меняющегося вокруг мира - надо ей соответствовать. Страх войны, которая у нас есть, а соседство с Россией с многовековой стратегией завоевания не дает думать, что когда-то будет иначе.
14. Что бы вы ни делали по-другому, если бы вы начали жизнь с самого начала?
Быстрее бы решалась начать свое дело, это нестрашно оказалось совсем. Ходить кругами, думать об этом - было страшнее. Это как прыгнуть со скалы. Ну надо выбрать разумную высоту, конечно. Ну а потом прыгнула, не разбилась - отлично, дальше просто работаешь ногами и руками))
15. Что вас вдохновляет?
Подростки. Не зря я на них сфокусировала. У меня сыну 15 лет, я это ежедневно наблюдаю. Ну и они такие прямые и еще чистые, мало стереотипов и неудач, еще полны энергии что-то совершать. Ухх) Любимый мужчина. Новые идеи - прямо наполняюсь до краев - это от любви создавать. Поскольку много в компьютере ежедневно, то любая трава/вода - прям радуюсь жизни, кстати, мама научила, что счастье в мелочах (этому прям учила). Успешные предприниматели (только не те, кто год как что-то создали, а те, кто уже прошли все сложности, падали и поднимались, и приуспели - вот они вдохновляют очень).
16. Каковы ваши надежды (для себя и для других)?
Что закончится война. Что в Украине люди с ценностями, мозгами и энергией создавать будущее прийдут к власти (сейчас как раз активный процесс). Что взрослые люди будут больше обучаться в течение всей жизни, формируя такие привычки и у своих детей. Что умные, проактивные украинцы будут возвращаться в страну, чтобы именно здесь создавать крутые продукты и услуги. Надеюсь, что у нас все получится)
17. Каковы некоторые ингредиенты для хорошей жизни? (Если «хорошая жизнь» была рецептом?)
Любовь, дети, любимое дело с хорошим доходом, развитие, спорт, вкусная еда, путешествия, много книг, классные фильмы, etc Я банальна?)) А, вино!!))
18. Какое качество вы больше всего любите в себе и почему?
Я сильная, я это знаю. Когда очень сложно, я себе говорю, «но у меня есть я».
19. Какой совет вы дадите вашему 14-летнему «я»?
Мысли решениями - никому не нужны ни сопли, ни проблемы; будь проактивна, все в жизни будет зависеть ровно от тебя - но это хорошая новость; любви будет много, не переживай, но относись уважительно к себе и к нему; да, ты худая, но как ты будешь этим довольна после 30 лет)) - внешность вообще в твоих руках, детка; не старайся быть похожей на других, твоя непохожесть потом и станет твоей фишкой; взрослые говорят, что жизнь очень быстро течет - это правда!!! - не теряй времени на ерунду, запусти первый свой коммерческий проект к 20 годам; ну и не обращай внимания на мнение окружающих и тех, у кого пока ничего не получилось; ищи счастье в мелочах, мама была права, это действительно тебя сделает счастливой ежедневно.
20. Что вы сейчас читаете? (какие книги вы подарите больше всего и какие ваши любимые чтения?)
Сейчас читаю и класс Powerful: Building a Culture of Freedom and Responsibility by Patty McCord. Из запомнившихся за последнее время: Inside the Box: A Proven System of Creativity for Breakthrough Results by Drew Boyd and 21 Lessons for the 21st Century by Yuval Harari.
21. Кто такая женщина WOW в вашем мире, которая вдохновляет вас и почему? Можете ли вы назначить трех (или более) женщин, которых вы знаете, которые отлично подходят для WOW WOMAN? Что бы вы сказали им, если бы у вас была возможность, почему вы восхищаетесь ими?
К сожалению, таких нет и среди мужчин тоже, не признаю кумиров.
